A Family
Tradition of Service Howard LaZerte and his wife Esther started the company in 1930. The
original location was on Lilac Drive in Golden Valley, Minnesota; thus the
name Golden Valley Transfer, which has been retained over the years. In
the early years, GVT hauled everything from dirt to cement block and
bricks, plowed snow, and dug basements. Household and office moving soon
became an important part of the business.

| In the early 1940's,
Howard hatched the idea to transport poles in flat-bed trailers for the
growing utility business. The convenience of pole delivery directly to job
sites provided an important service and soon GVT was hauling poles to
other states for NSP and Bell Pole & Lumber. Other early customers
included McGill & Gibbs.

Howard had the foresight to continue to expand other facets of the business. His basic philosophy was "if they can make it, he would find a way to haul it." To accommodate the growing business, GVT moved in 1960 to an undeveloped area known by the address of Route 2, Osseo, Minnesota. GVT has remained at this location while the City of Maple Grove has grown and developed the surrounding area. In 1974, Howard hauled his last load of poles. He was in the Red Wing, Minnesota yard of NSP where he suffered a heart attack and died. Bill Gray from NSP called Esther and asked if she would continue the hauling business. She said "yes" and stated that her brother, Tolvo Neime, would do the driving. The company continued as a sole proprietorship under the leadership of Howard's wife, Esther LaZerte. Howard and Esther's daughter, Helen (Baker) had been involved in the office administration of GVT during the 1980's. In 1982, she attended Dakota County Vocational School and obtained her Class A license. Under her uncle's tutelage she learned how to unload poles and stake the trailers. GVT became a partnership consisting of Helen Baker and Esther LaZerte. Esther ran the office, answered phones, and took orders. Helen was a load driver hauling poles, lumber, and steel products. GVT was incorporated in 1990 with Helen Baker as president. Helen's two daughters are beginning to become involved with the family business. Helen is hopeful that her daughters will carry the business into the next generation and fulfill their grandfather's legacy of "if they can make it, we will find a way to haul it."
